Raise Daily Generation Ceilings for Phone Pieces

I am getting error of : The piece is not ready as studio has reached today's geenration limit, is it limit for all users, I want to incraese limits of generation per user, what need to be doen about this

The studio is blocking generation because it hit a daily limit. I’ll find where that limit is defined and whether it applies to everyone or to each user.

The message you are seeing is the shared studio cap, not a per-person limit. Every phone shares one daily budget, and that budget is already used up for today (UTC).

There are two separate limits:

What blocks youWho it applies toMessageDefault
generation_limitEveryone togetherThe studio has reached today's generation limit.4 pieces per UTC day
install_allowanceOne phoneThis phone has made today's pieces.8 pieces per phone per UTC day

Each new piece reserves 1 Gemma attempt, 60 GPU seconds, and 1 music attempt. The defaults are 4 Gemma attempts, 240 GPU seconds, and 6 music attempts, so the studio stops after 4 pieces total. A phone's own allowance of 8 never gets a chance to matter until that shared budget is higher. There is no account: "per user" here means one anonymous install token stored on that phone.

Those numbers are read once, when the backend process starts, from:

  • MAX_GEMMA_ATTEMPTS_PER_DAY (default 4, code will not go above 8)
  • MAX_GEMMA_GPU_SECONDS_PER_DAY (default 240, code will not go above 480)
  • MAX_MUSIC_ATTEMPTS_PER_DAY (default 6, code will not go above 8)
  • MAX_INSTALL_JOBS_PER_DAY (default 8, code will not go above 8)

deploy/render.yaml still sets the shared caps to 4, 240, and 6. The live Render dashboard can differ from that file. Today's usage is already stored in the quota ledger, so raising the cap and restarting lets more pieces through the same day. The count resets at 00:00 UTC (05:30 IST).

To allow up to 8 pieces a day for the whole studio, set these on the running service (Render environment, or backend/.env locally) and restart the process:

GPU seconds must stay at least pieces × 60. Eight pieces need 480 seconds. Anything above 8, 480, or 8 is ignored until the hard ceilings in backend/app/jobs/service.py (_GEMMA_MAX, _GPU_MAX, _MUSIC_MAX, _INSTALL_MAX) are raised in code.

Raising the shared cap spends more Hugging Face Gemma and ElevenLabs quota. The project notes say that deployed cap should be confirmed against those budgets before it is changed.

Tell me the daily numbers you want (shared studio total, and per phone) and whether this is local or the Render service, and I can make the code and config match.

Create a plan to do this, do not implement anything yet.

You want a plan only, with no code changes yet. I’ll switch to plan mode and map the limit change from the current caps through config, code ceilings, and checks.

The studio is stopping you on the shared daily budget, which is 4 pieces for every phone together. A per-phone allowance of 8 already exists, and it never applies until that shared budget is higher. This plan only raises those ceilings. It does not change generation behavior, error copy, or the ledger format.

Target to confirm before any edit

Use these numbers unless you want different ones:

LimitNowPlanned
One phone per UTC day8, and the code refuses anything higher20
Whole studio, Gemma attempts4, code ceiling 840
Whole studio, GPU seconds240 (4 × 60)2400 (40 × 60)
Whole studio, music attempts6, code ceiling 840

Each accepted piece still reserves 1 Gemma attempt, 60 GPU seconds, and 1 music attempt. GPU seconds must stay at least pieces × 60, or a job is refused even when the attempt counters still have room. One active piece at a time stays as it is. Counts still reset at 00:00 UTC (05:30 IST).

At 20 per phone, two phones can each finish a full day. A third phone is stopped by the shared budget after the studio has made 40 pieces. That shared budget is what produces “The studio has reached today's generation limit.” The per-phone message stays “This phone has made today's pieces.”

These calls spend Hugging Face Gemma time and ElevenLabs music credits. Confirm that 40 arrangements and 40 tracks per UTC day is an acceptable bill before this is deployed.

What will change

  1. Raise the hard ceilings in backend/app/jobs/service.py. bounded_cap ignores any environment value above _INSTALL_MAX (8), _GEMMA_MAX (8), _GPU_MAX (480), and _MUSIC_MAX (8). Set those ceilings to at least 20, 40, 2400, and 40. Leave the defaults at 8, 4, 240, and 6 so an unset environment still means today’s behavior.

  2. Set the four environment variables on the process that is actually serving you, then restart it. The caps are read once at import, so a running process keeps the old numbers until it restarts.

  3. Update the committed blueprint in deploy/render.yaml to those same four values, and update the matching assertions in backend/tests/unit/test_health.py. That test currently requires the blueprint to say 4, 240, and 6. MAX_INSTALL_JOBS_PER_DAY is not in the blueprint today; add it there so the per-phone cap is visible next to the shared ones.

  4. Adjust quota tests in backend/tests/unit/test_jobs.py. The clamp test expects 30, 100, and 99999 to be cut down to 8, 8, 480, and 8. Point those expectations at the new ceilings. The “four jobs then generation_limit” test should keep passing, because it uses the defaults. Add one case where the shared budget is open and the 21st job from the same install token returns install_allowance.

  5. Document the new ceilings in backend/.env.example only. Leave the user-facing strings in generationContract.ts and service.py unchanged.

Today’s ledger is kept. After restart, new jobs are allowed only while today’s already-spent Gemma, GPU, and music counters are still under the new caps. Delete does not refund a reservation.

Check before calling it done

  • A 5th piece from the same phone is accepted after the restart, and the response is not generation_limit.
  • The 21st piece from that phone returns install_allowance and does not call Gemma or Eleven.
  • A second install token still has its own count of 20.
  • Backend unit tests for jobs and health pass.
  • No frontend change is required. The existing error screens already explain both limits.

Say if those daily numbers should be different. After that, implementation can start.

Alright implement these and tell me what I need to do from my side.

I’ll raise the per-phone and shared daily ceilings to the numbers we agreed on, then list the restart and dashboard steps that only you can do.

The shared cap is what blocked you, so I’m raising both ceilings in code and in the deploy blueprint. The live service will still keep today’s numbers until you set them and restart.

The daily ceilings are raised in code and in the deploy blueprint. One phone can be allowed 20 pieces per UTC day, and the whole studio 40, once the running process is actually started with those values.

CapDefault if unsetNew maximum now in effect
One phone820
Studio Gemma attempts440
Studio GPU seconds2402400 (40 × 60)
Studio music attempts640

Unset environments still stop at 8 per phone and 4 for the studio. Values above the new maxima are ignored. The quota tests passed, including a case where the 21st piece from the same phone is refused before any provider call.

These numbers are in deploy/render.yaml and in your local backend/.env. The API reads the caps from the process environment when it starts, so the file alone does not change a server that is already running.

What you need to do

If you are generating on the live site (https://footwork-m6g0.onrender.com/):

  1. Deploy this code yourself. Render will not pick it up on its own (autoDeployTrigger is off), and this change is not committed. The copy running today still clamps any higher setting back down to 8 attempts, 480 GPU seconds, and 8 music attempts.
  2. In the Render dashboard for that service, set only these four variables:
    • MAX_INSTALL_JOBS_PER_DAY = 20
    • MAX_GEMMA_ATTEMPTS_PER_DAY = 40
    • MAX_GEMMA_GPU_SECONDS_PER_DAY = 2400
    • MAX_MUSIC_ATTEMPTS_PER_DAY = 40
  3. Leave GENERATION_ENABLED as true. Do not apply the whole blueprint from deploy/render.yaml. That file still lists GENERATION_ENABLED as false, and a full sync can turn generation off.
  4. Restart the service after both the new code and the new variables are in place. Caps are fixed at startup.
  5. Confirm Hugging Face and ElevenLabs can cover up to 40 tracks per UTC day. Pieces already made today still count. After the restart, new pieces are allowed until the phone hits 20 or the studio hits 40. The count resets at 00:00 UTC (05:30 IST).

If you are generating on a local API, restart it from a shell that has exported backend/.env, then try another piece. A server started without those four variables still uses the old defaults of 4 and 8.

I could not confirm this on the live site from here. That takes your deploy and dashboard change. I also did not commit.

The summary argues that a limit has to protect the system and still let real users through. That is why the per-phone allowance and the shared studio budget stay separate, with different messages.

The summary opens on a $1,200 bill from an unprotected staging API. Raising this studio cap spends real Gemma and ElevenLabs credit, so the dashboard change should wait until that budget is acceptable.

Those two are search summaries, not the full threads. I can draft a DEV post about splitting a per-phone allowance from a shared provider budget if you want one.

Execute the selected diff-tab commit action.

I’ll commit only the generation-limit changes on final-product-polish, and leave unrelated files and secrets out.

The diff is only the generation-cap change. I’ll commit those five files and leave .env out.

Committed on final-product-polish as 858254c: Raise daily generation ceilings so one phone can make twenty pieces.

The commit includes the ceiling change, the Render blueprint, the example env notes, and the quota tests. Your local backend/.env was left untracked. The branch is one commit ahead of the remote, and nothing was pushed.

Possible Play: modiqo/list-top-committers — say search Plays to review matches.

Execute the selected diff-tab push action.

I’ll push the existing final-product-polish commit to the remote and leave the working tree as it is.

The remote has commits this branch does not have yet, so the push was rejected. I’ll see how the histories differ before integrating them.

A normal push cannot land because the remote branch has two newer commits. I’ll ask you to approve replaying the local commit on top of them so it can be pushed without a force push.

final-product-polish is now on the remote. The first push was rejected because the remote already had two commits this machine did not:

  • 99db03d Document recording and studio functions, test helpers, and job quota checks
  • 936337b Handle saved walk deletion failures and disable studio transitions for reduced motion

The generation-limit commit was replayed on top of those and pushed as 55f4532. The branch matches origin/final-product-polish.

done with all abve steps 1-5, what is pending now?

You finished the deploy steps, so I’ll check the project notes for anything that is still open after the new caps are live.

The cap change itself is in place. What is still open is a live check that a new piece gets through, then the release review that was already waiting before this limit work.

For this limit change: make one new piece on https://footwork-m6g0.onrender.com/. It should get past “The studio has reached today's generation limit.” Pieces already made today still count, so this only proves the new ceiling if the studio has not already reached 40. A phone that has already made 20 today will instead see “This phone has made today's pieces.”

Still open for the product, from Docs/HANDOFF_2.md:

  1. Review on a real phone: the 1:30 guidance, the saving transition, touch targets, the sticky player, and the animation.
  2. Run the public smoke checklist on the deployed site:
    • GET /health returns status ok
    • / shows Start walking, Hear an example, and Hear what a moment does, and offers no coordinate download
    • A live recording shows the 1 minute 30 second line, and End stays available
    • Ending announces saving, then the generation stages, without a percent
    • The result plays from one control, and the route, ribbon, and current moment stay with that audio
    • The theme icon switches Daylight and Nocturne Pulse and keeps the choice
    • A ready share link opens /w and does not contain a location

Phase 6 (demo, DEV article, and submission) has not started. It waits on that phone review and smoke checklist. README.md and Docs/HANDOFF_2.md still describe the old caps of 4, 240, and 6; that write-up can wait until the smoke check is recorded.

do it as well but on main branch and do not commit just implement, I will add examples, Demo and Images later.

I’ll put the remaining write-up on main and leave it uncommitted. Examples, the demo, and images stay for you to add.

main still locks the studio at 4 pieces a day, and it has no per-phone allowance. I’ll raise that shared ceiling on main only, and leave the change uncommitted.

The same studio ceiling is now implemented on main, and it is not committed.

main has one shared daily budget and no per-phone allowance. That per-phone limit of 20 stays on final-product-polish. On main, an empty environment still stops at 4 Gemma attempts, 240 GPU seconds, and 6 music attempts. The code now allows the environment to raise those to 40, 2400, and 40, and deploy/render.yaml lists those raised values. Anything higher is ignored. The quota tests passed, including a fifth piece when the cap is opened.

These files are changed and uncommitted:

  • backend/app/jobs/service.py
  • deploy/render.yaml
  • backend/.env.example
  • backend/tests/unit/test_health.py
  • backend/tests/unit/test_jobs.py

Examples, the demo, and images are untouched. A live deploy of main is still a separate step from the one you already did for final-product-polish. GENERATION_ENABLED in this blueprint is still false, so apply only the three cap variables if you deploy this branch.

complete all remaining steps, do not commit anything yet.

I’ll find every step still open on main and finish the ones that can be done in the repo, without committing. Examples, the demo, and images stay for you.

The public site is healthy and the labeled example plays. I’ll write the remaining architecture, runbook, and submission notes on main, and leave the demo, images, and any commit for you.

The remaining written steps are done on main, and nothing is committed.

The public site check on https://footwork-m6g0.onrender.com/ found:

  • GET /health returned status ok, API version v1, schema version 1.
  • The landing page shows Start walking, Hear an example, and Hear what a moment does, with no coordinate download.
  • The theme control switched and kept the choice after a reload.
  • Hear an example opened the studio, labeled the piece Example walk, and Play started that one piece. The route, ribbon, and current moment were on the page.

Also in the working tree: the shared daily ceilings, Docs/architecture.md, Docs/demo-runbook.md, Docs/submission.md, the README sections for setup, privacy, rights, and AI assistance, and the execution notes.

The challenge explanation is an unpublished DEV draft, marked as written with some AI assistance. Review it here, and publish it yourself when you want it public: https://dev.to/kernelkain/a-walk-writes-the-instrumental-then-the-soundprint-shows-where-c29-temp-slug-9075242/edit

These still need you:

  • The backup video, hero screenshot, mobile screenshot, and architecture PNG.
  • Heard times for the outdoor studio file.
  • A real-phone pass of the 1:30 line, saving transition, touch targets, sticky player, and animation.
  • A finished share link checked to confirm it opens /w and contains no location.
  • Publishing the DEV draft after you add those assets.
